New Date and Location for MUMBO SAUCE: April 5th - 21st

Continuing in its tradition of coordinating gallery exhibitions with D.C.’s world-class museum shows, Contemporary Wing presents, “MUMBO SAUCE,” in conjunction with the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Pump Me Up – D.C. Subculture of the 1980s, currently on display at the museum. MUMBO SAUCE is a survey of artists with deep roots in Washington, D.C., and explores how such factors as Go-Go, graffiti, punk, hardcore, graphic design and fine art have shaped and influenced the work of these artists. MUMBO SAUCE is curated jointly by Roger Gastman, curator of the Corcoran’s “Pump Me Up” show, and Lauren Gentile, founder of Contemporary Wing.
Mumbo Sauce is a red, sweet, and tangy sauce, akin to barbeque or plum sauce. Indigenous to Washington, D.C., the condiment is found in carry outs throughout D.C. and the surrounding metro area. Mumbo Sauce is endemic to Washington D.C.’s African American culture, and it is the flavor of home for many D.C. natives.
Just as Mumbo Sauce conveys a rich texture and flavor that is distinctively D.C. in the cultural arena of food, the art works in the MUMBO SAUCE exhibit reflect the living, breathing soul of the city. MUMBO SAUCE explores how living and working in the District has shaped the artistic evolution of the featured artists. Participating artists include BORF, Richard Colman, Cynthia Connolly, Tim Conlon, COOL "DISCO" DAN, Clark Fox, Globe Poster Archive, Mark Jenkins, Rosina Teri Memolo, Mingering Mike and Robin Rose.

LYRICS:

BEEDIE VERSE:

Ayo back up in the days though, when I was just a lil shorty, no J-O

Like we ain't have a care up in the world to name

Now the whole world wish we young forever and remain, never change

But we never stay the same on the same roads

And our interests and age grows as we innovate those, slow

We forced to be tossed in the kitchen

When life throws the fork at you don't be the chicken

I remember skippin class like I had the last… Laugh now cry later

Had a crazy past

Used to throw the finger at the bike cops passin (fuck em)

Fuck em, then we'd run around in Frick Park dashin

Officer Caplan used to know my first and my last name

Arrested me in school, that's a bad day

We used to chill up in The Smoke Shop, fuck with dude

Catch me wilin out now, ain't nothin new

BEEDIE OUTRO:

You can't turn it back when it's gone…

No groundhog flash in the morn…

And life moves fast when you young

When you look back are you gon pass where you goin?

I wanna be young forever though…

Order tickets or make a donation HERE!

Yung Ka aka Robert Stewart's Official "Cancer Vs. Me" Release party is scheduled for March 14th, 2013!
Make-A-Wish has already graciously granted Yung Ka's wish to work on a song with Mac Miller. Now that he has recovered enough to perform, he wants more then anything to release the music that has inspired him during his incredible struggle. The Stewart family also wants to show their appreciation for everything the charity has already done, so the two main goals for this event are to raise money for Make-A-Wish and to give Yung Ka the opportunity to perform his song cowritten by Mac Miller. Graciously, the Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh has offered their venue to have a proper release party.

Jung Phil, Beedie, KH and other surprise performers will be doing short sets to show their support for Yung Ka and Make-A-Wish. World renowned battle rapper, Real Deal, will perform a freestyle to get the audience involved by asking them to participate. Ivory The Human Hustle will be hosting for the evening. DJ Cap Com has offered to host his mixed tape, "Cancer Vs. Me."

The event will begin at 7:00 pm for appetizers and cocktail hour, at 8:00 pm the show will commence. There will be a silent auction and everyone will have the opportunity to bid on various services and items such as: Jewelry, Photo Shoots, Dance Classes, Salon Services, Limo Service for an evening, Studio Time and a much much more! Our sponsors have been extremely generous in offering their merchandise and services to ensure a successful auction and event.

VIP tables are available for those of you who want to bring family and friends, this is an all ages event. But we wouldn't suggest small children, considering it is a concert style event where alcohol will be served. There will be surprise celebrity guests in attendance. If you are unable to attend but still want to show your support you can mail checks directly to the family or pledge your donation here. Thank you all in advance for your generosity and support. We hope to see everyone on the 14th to celebrate with Yung Ka and his family, he is officially in remission!
